Why Choose a Wrap Carrier for Your Newborn

Wrap carriers are known for their snug and secure hold, mimicking the warmth and coziness of the womb. They allow for skin-to-skin contact and are particularly beneficial for newborns. Here are some compelling reasons to choose a wrap carrier for your little one:

1. Bonding: The close physical contact between you and your baby promotes bonding, trust, and emotional security.

2. Hands-Free Convenience: With your baby wrapped securely, your hands are free to attend to daily tasks, whether it's preparing a meal, folding laundry, or taking a walk.

3. Comfort and Support: The even distribution of your baby's weight and ergonomic positioning reduce the risk of discomfort or strain. With tiny newborns, I find wrap style baby carriers to be more comfortable and soothing, and so they are my go-to choice for the earliest days of babywearing.

4. Soothing: Many newborns find the gentle rocking motion and the rhythm of your heartbeat soothing, helping to calm them. There are many times I’ve put my baby in a wrap carrier just to soothe them. This is especially helpful during the infamous witching hour - be sure to check out our post on the witching hour and how to survive. Spoiler alert - a wrap carrier can really help!

5. Privacy and Discretion: Wrap carriers provide a discreet way to breastfeed your baby while on the go. It can also keep your baby out of sight or arms reach from those who may otherwise get a bit too close for comfort while out in public, especially during cold and flu season.

Step-by-Step: How to Use a Wrap Carrier with Your Newborn

What You'll Need

Before we dive into the step-by-step guide, let's ensure you have everything you need:

Now, let's get started:

Step 1: Prepare the Carrier

1.1 Familiarize Yourself: Unbox your wrap carrier, read the instruction manual, and watch the manufacturer's video tutorial if available.

1.2 Wash and Care: Newborn skin can be extra sensitive, so I would recommend washing before you put baby in the wrap carrier for the first time.

Step 2: Find the Right Starting Position

2.1 Position the Boba Wrap: Start by spreading the wrap on a flat surface, like your bed or the floor. Ensure it's free from twists or tangles.

2.2 Locate The Center Panel: Locate the center panel of the wrap and identify the middle marker. You will always have this marker in the front center of your body.

Step 3: Put on the Carrier

Note that I like to put the Boba Wrap carrier on BEFORE I pick up my baby as I haven’t found a good way to put it on while holding baby safely. Make sure baby is laying in a safe, secure place while you put on the Boba Wrap. Once the carrier is on, you can then position baby in the carrier and make final adjustments. Read on for the specific steps! I’ve also included a video tutorial of me putting on my Boba wrap carrier.

3.1 Find Your Center With the Center Marker: With the middle marker at your stomach level right under your breasts, place the wrap flush against your abdomen with the middle marker facing out and the rest of the wrap fabric on each side of you.

3.2 Cross the Wrap Behind Your Back: Cross the two tails of the wrap behind your back, still at abdomen level.

3.3 Bring the Tails to the Front Over Your Shoulders: Pull the tails around to the front over your shoulder and cross them. I recommend pausing here to ensure the wrap tails are not too twisted as this can create discomfort for you when wearing the wrap once the baby is in. Make sure everything is tight with no bunching, especially on your back.

3.4 Tuck Crossed Tails Inside of The Belly Panel: The crossed tails from your shoulder should now cross again in front of your belly right inside of the belly panel. The center marker should be the furthest layer from your body at this point.

3.5 Loop Tails Behind Your Back Again: The tails should be crossed yet again around your back at waist level.

3.6 Tie a Secure Knot: Securely tie a double knot. I personally like to tie the knot in the front of the wrap, but you can tie the knot wherever it is most comfortable.

Step 4: Position Your Baby

4.1 Hold Your Baby: Carefully slide your baby into the wrap, ensuring their legs are in an "M" position. Their knees should be higher than their bottom. This will prevent hip dysplasia.

4.2 Spread the Fabric: Spread the fabric across your baby's back and shoulders, creating a comfortable and secure cocoon. There should be a total of 3 panels that directly support your baby - the belly panel and the two crossed side panels.

4.3 Adjust for Comfort: Make any necessary adjustments to ensure your baby is snug, secure, and close to your chest. You may need to tighten the wrap. Your baby is positioned correctly if their head is close enough to kiss, they are upright, you can see their face, and they are resting comfortably.

Step 5: Check for Safety

5.1 Safety Check: Ensure your baby's airways are clear, and they can breathe comfortably.

5.2 Keep Baby Visible: Always keep your baby's face visible and close enough for you to monitor their breathing.

5.3 Comfort is Key: Make sure your baby's legs and hips are positioned comfortably.

5.4 No Slumping: Check that your baby's back is straight and not slumping. They should be vertical with a head in a neutral position. The chin should not be tilted up or down.

Step 6: Practice and Patience

6.1 Practice Makes Perfect: Babywearing can take some practice. Don't be discouraged if it's not perfect on your first try. Over time, you'll become more proficient. I have gotten a lot faster with putting my wrap on, and while it seemed daunting the first few times, it is now very easy.

6.2 Listen to Your Baby: Pay attention to your baby's cues. If they seem uncomfortable or fussy, make adjustments as needed.

Conclusion

Babywearing with a wrap carrier is not only a practical way to keep your hands free but also a beautiful way to bond with your newborn. Whether you choose a Boba wrap, a Moby wrap, or another brand, the key is to follow the manufacturer's instructions and practice regularly. Soon, you'll become a pro at wrapping your baby securely, creating moments of closeness and comfort that will last a lifetime. Happy babywearing!
